Science Fiction & Fantasy, two of the most popular genres commonly grouped together. These two genres share the commonality of being unrealistic and “out of this world”. There are elements of life beyond earth, inhumane creatures and many more appealing to a vast range of audiences. But why should they not be grouped together as the same thing?
What is Science Fiction?
Just as the name itself hints, science fiction is simply fiction which is based on theoretical science. This includes plot elements and settings which may not be realistic yet. Rather the stories are suggested as possible under scientific theory. This could be things such as life in planets beyond earth or ambitious technology most commonly held in dystopian settings. These ambitious technologies often include themes of time and far space travel, and even visiting inhumane bodies such as aliens.
What is Fantasy?
The fantasy genre in stories consists of mythical creatures and other supernatural elements which are unrealistic to the current world we know. Most fantasy stories are backed up with wild imagination with no limit whatsover. There are families and fictional cultures with complex histories and languages which do not exist in our own earth. The aesthetics of these worlds and creatures have no limit, while being percieved as the norm in the plot of the story.
How is it Different?
There are many differences between science fiction & fantasy. Can you tell which is which?
- its level of realism (one is theoritically possible whlie the other is purely imaginary)
- the eras of its writing (one is based on modern science while the other stems from ancient myths)
- the function and aesthetics of the setting (one consists of hyper-technology while the other is purely supernatural)
